Morocco has been experiencing a notable increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest alert reported in the Fez-Meknès region on August 2, 2026. Over the years, wildfires have contributed significantly to environmental degradation, accounting for approximately 15% of the total tree cover loss. The country's tree cover extent stands at 648,566 hectares, which is only about 1.57% of its total land area of 41,348,767 hectares.
Analyzing the data from 2001 to 2025, Morocco has seen a fluctuating pattern in tree cover loss due to various factors, including wildfires, forestry, and urbanization. In 2022, the country experienced its highest tree cover loss, with wildfires contributing to 5.20% of the total loss that year. The net change in tree cover indicates a slight positive trend, with a 3.41% increase over the years.
