The country's tree cover extent stands at 78 million hectares, with a net change indicating a loss of 762,198 hectares.
From 2001 to 2025, shifting agriculture has been the primary driver of tree cover loss, contributing to over 75% of the total loss. Wildfires have also played a significant role, particularly in recent years, with their impact becoming more pronounced. In 2025 alone, wildfires accounted for 21,548 hectares of tree cover loss.
The trend highlights the urgent need for sustainable land management practices and increased awareness of the environmental impact of such incidents. As Peru continues to grapple with these challenges, the focus must shift towards preserving its rich biodiversity and mitigating the adverse effects of deforestation.
