In recent years, Serbia has experienced a notable increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest alert recorded on August 13, 2026, in the Vojvodina region. This incident highlights a concerning trend in the country’s environmental landscape. Over the past two decades, Serbia has seen a significant rise in tree cover loss, primarily driven by forestry activities, wildfires, and urbanization. Notably, wildfires alone accounted for approximately 2.30% of the total tree cover loss in 2025.
The data reveals that forestry activities have been the predominant driver of tree cover loss, contributing to over 75% of the total loss in recent years. Urbanization and wildfires have also played significant roles, with urbanization accounting for around 1.50% of the loss in 2025. Despite these challenges, Serbia has managed a net positive change in tree cover, with a 1.18% increase, thanks to reforestation efforts and natural regrowth.
