Kazakhstan recently experienced a new wildfire incident in the Abai Region on August 17, 2026. From 2001 to 2025, Kazakhstan has seen a net gain of approximately 7.12% in tree cover, with a stable area of 3,892,793 hectares. However, the country also faced a 0.77% change in tree cover, with significant losses attributed to forestry and wildfires.
Forestry activities have been a major driver of tree cover loss, contributing to over 44% of the total loss in some years. Wildfires have also played a significant role, with incidents peaking in 2023, resulting in a loss of 2,203 hectares. Despite these challenges, Kazakhstan's tree cover has shown resilience, with a net gain of 30,416 hectares over the years.
