Tanzania has been experiencing a concerning trend of increasing wildfire incidents, with the latest reported in the Singida Region on September 19, 2026. Over the years, the country has witnessed a significant decline in tree cover, with a net loss of approximately 3.82 million hectares, equating to an 11.30% reduction. The primary drivers of this decline include shifting agriculture, forestry, wildfires, and urbanization. Shifting agriculture alone accounts for a substantial portion of the tree cover loss. The persistent reduction in tree cover poses a threat to biodiversity and the environment, urging a need for broader discussions on sustainable land management practices.
