Croatia has experienced a significant increase in wildfire incidents over the past two decades, with the latest alert reported in Šibenik-Knin County on August 20, 2026. Wildfires have contributed to approximately 5% of the total tree cover loss in the country. Despite a net tree cover change of -0.25%, forestry remains the primary driver of tree cover loss, accounting for nearly 90% of the total loss over the years. Urbanization and shifting agriculture have had minimal impact compared to wildfires and forestry. The data highlights the urgent need for sustainable forest management and fire prevention strategies to mitigate future risks and preserve Croatia's natural landscapes.
