Canada has been grappling with a significant increase in wildfire incidents, as highlighted by a recent alert from the Northwest Territories on September 22, 2026. Over the past two decades, wildfires have emerged as a major driver of tree cover loss, accounting for approximately 60% of the total loss. The year 2023 witnessed a staggering 6543768.98 hectares affected by wildfires, marking a dramatic surge compared to previous years.
Forestry activities have also contributed to the decline, responsible for nearly 30% of the tree cover loss. Urbanization, while a smaller factor, has consistently impacted forest areas. The net change in tree cover over the years reveals a concerning trend, with a 2.76% decrease in tree cover since 2001.
