Malawi has been experiencing a significant increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest alert reported in the Northern Region on October 24, 2026. Over the years, the country has witnessed a concerning trend in tree cover loss, primarily driven by shifting agriculture, forestry, wildfires, and urbanization. From 2001 to 2025, Malawi saw a net decrease of approximately 7.88% in tree cover, equating to a loss of 222,335 hectares. The most significant contributors to this decline have been shifting agriculture, accounting for around 80% of the total tree cover loss, followed by forestry and wildfires. The recent wildfire incident highlights the urgent need for environmental conservation efforts to mitigate further loss and protect the country's natural resources. This trend poses a threat to biodiversity and emphasizes the importance of sustainable land management practices.
