Rwanda is grappling with significant environmental challenges, as recent data reveals a concerning trend in tree cover decline. The country, which spans over 2.50 million hectares, has witnessed a net loss of approximately 16,970 hectares of tree cover, equating to a 2.86% reduction. This decline is compounded by a recent incident reported in the Eastern Province on August 25, 2026.
The historical data from 2001 to 2025 highlights a persistent pattern of tree cover loss, primarily driven by shifting agriculture, forestry, and urbanization. Notably, shifting agriculture alone accounted for the majority of the tree cover loss over the years. Despite some gains in tree cover, the net change remains negative, indicating ongoing environmental stress.
The recent incident in the Eastern Province serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by Rwanda's ecosystems.
