Ethiopia is grappling with a significant environmental challenge as recent data highlights a 3.60% decline in tree cover, primarily driven by shifting agriculture and wildfires. The Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region recently reported a new wildfire incident, underscoring the ongoing environmental threats. Over the years, shifting agriculture has been the leading cause of tree cover loss, contributing to over 90% of the total loss. Wildfires, although less frequent, have shown a worrying trend, with a notable increase in incidents. From 2001 to 2025, the country has experienced a net loss of approximately 738,331 hectares of tree cover. This trend poses a severe threat to biodiversity and the livelihoods of communities dependent on forest resources. As Ethiopia continues to face these environmental challenges, it is crucial to foster discussions on sustainable land management and conservation strategies to mitigate further loss.
