Angola Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents as Tree Cover Declines by Over 4%
Angola Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents as Tree Cover Declines by Over 4%

In recent years, Angola has witnessed a significant increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest reported in Cuando Cubango Province on July 28, 2026. This alarming trend is coupled with a concerning decline in tree cover, which has decreased by over 4% since 2001. The primary driver of this decline is shifting agriculture, responsible for approximately 90% of the tree cover loss. Wildfires have also contributed to this environmental challenge, accounting for a smaller yet significant portion of the loss. The data reveals a net change in tree cover of -2,188,485 hectares, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable land management practices. As Angola continues to grapple with these environmental challenges, the focus must shift towards finding solutions that balance economic development with ecological preservation.
