May 2026: Tunisia Faces Unprecedented Rainfall Surge
May 2026: Tunisia Faces Unprecedented Rainfall Surge

This May, Tunisia has experienced a significant deviation from historical climate patterns, with a notable increase in rainfall. The total rainfall for May 2026 reached 411 mm, a dramatic 81.80% decrease compared to May 2023, which saw an unprecedented 2261.60 mm. This marks a return to more typical levels after last year's anomaly, but it is still 59.70% higher than the long-term average of 257.30 mm for May.

Temperature trends also show deviations, with May 2026 recording a minimum temperature of 15.97°C and a maximum of 27°C. These figures are slightly below the previous year's temperatures of 16.43°C and 27.09°C, respectively. However, they remain consistent with the long-term trend of increasing temperatures, reflecting a gradual warming pattern over the years.

The significant fluctuations in rainfall and temperature can have profound impacts on agriculture, water resources, and overall ecosystem stability in Tunisia. The return to more moderate rainfall levels may provide some relief to water management systems, but the long-term warming trend continues to pose challenges for sustainable development.
