Bolivia has been grappling with an increasing trend of tree cover loss and wildfires, as recent data indicates a concerning escalation in these environmental incidents. Over the past two decades, the country has experienced a significant reduction in its tree cover, with a net loss of 3,324,443 hectares, which equates to a 5.61% decrease in its total tree cover. Shifting agriculture has been identified as the primary driver of this loss, responsible for a substantial portion of the deforestation.
In 2022 alone, Bolivia faced a tree cover loss of nearly 596,000 hectares, with shifting agriculture accounting for approximately 26% of this loss. Wildfires also contributed to the degradation, with over 1,300 hectares affected. These incidents not only diminish the tree cover but also result in substantial carbon emissions, further exacerbating climate change concerns.
