South Africa has recently witnessed a wildfire incident in Free State, marking a continued challenge in the nation's struggle against environmental degradation. Over the past two decades, the country has experienced a significant trend in tree cover loss, with a net decrease of 1.86%. The total area affected by tree cover loss amounts to 530,16.50 hectares, while gains have been somewhat lower at 388,239.98 hectares.
Forestry activities have been the leading cause of tree cover loss, followed by shifting agriculture, contributing to the majority of the total loss. Wildfires and urbanization also play a role but to a lesser extent. The cumulative effect of these drivers has not only altered the landscape but has also resulted in substantial emissions of CO2, further exacerbating the impact on the climate.
