Sudan has reported a new fire incident in the South Kordofan region, as the country grapples with broader environmental challenges. Over the past two decades, Sudan has experienced significant fluctuations in tree cover loss, primarily driven by shifting agriculture. The latest data reveals a single fire alert in the region, underscoring the persistent threat of wildfires to the country's natural resources.
Despite these incidents, there has been a net increase in tree cover, with a gain of 216,597.75 hectares compared to a loss of 85,308.98 hectares. This represents a net positive change of 131,288.77 hectares, indicating a 3.45% increase in tree cover. However, the impact of shifting agriculture remains a concern, as it has been the predominant driver of tree cover loss, contributing to the majority of the 146,657.99 metric tons of CO2 equivalent gross emissions in 2022.
