Cameroon Grapples with Tree Cover Loss Amid Recent Fire Incident
Cameroon Grapples with Tree Cover Loss Amid Recent Fire Incident

Cameroon has experienced a significant tree cover loss over the past two decades, with a recent fire incident reported in the North Region highlighting ongoing environmental challenges. The country's total area spans over 46.60 million hectares, of which approximately 31.50 million hectares were covered by trees. However, the net change in tree cover has been negative, with a loss of around 976,902 hectares and a gain of about 351,063 hectares, leading to a net loss of 625,839 hectares, which translates to a 1.71% decrease in tree cover.

The primary driver of tree cover loss has been shifting agriculture, responsible for the vast majority of the deforestation. Forestry activities have also contributed, albeit to a much lesser extent. Over the years, the total tree cover loss has fluctuated, with the most significant loss recorded in 2014 at over 181,851 hectares. The cumulative effect of these losses is substantial, with the total gross emissions of CO2 equivalent reaching alarming figures.

The latest fire alert, although isolated, serves as a reminder of the persistent threats to Cameroon's forests. The incident underscores the need for continued vigilance and sustainable management practices to preserve the remaining tree cover and mitigate further environmental degradation.
