Argentina Battles Tree Cover Loss as Latest Fire Incident Hits La Rioja Province

Argentina has faced a significant challenge with tree cover loss over the past two decades, with the latest incident reported in La Rioja Province on August 5, 2024. The country's tree cover extent spans over 39 million hectares, which has seen a net change of -10.45% due to various factors. Shifting agriculture and forestry activities have been the primary drivers, accounting for substantial portions of the tree cover loss each year. In the year 2022 alone, shifting agriculture led to a loss of over 78,000 hectares, while forestry contributed to over 40,000 hectares lost. Wildfires and urbanization also played roles, though to a lesser extent. The cumulative effect of these drivers has led to a total loss of over 4.60 million hectares of tree cover, with only about 1.10 million hectares gained, resulting in a net loss of over 3.50 million hectares. This trend poses a significant environmental concern for the country's biodiversity and ecological balance.
