In a recent analysis of Hungary's tree cover, a notable fluctuation has been observed over the years. With an area of over 9.30 million hectares, Hungary's tree cover extends to approximately 2.10 million hectares. The country has experienced a net change in tree cover, which includes a loss of around 122,671 hectares and a gain of about 207,301 hectares, leading to a net positive change of 84,630 hectares. This represents a 4.13% change in tree cover over the observed period.
Forestry activities have been identified as the primary driver of tree cover loss, accounting for the vast majority of the hectares lost. Shifting agriculture and urbanization also contribute to the loss but to a much lesser extent. Notably, wildfires have not been a significant factor in the reported tree cover changes.
