Rising Wildfires and Urban Expansion Impact U.S. Tree Cover
Rising Wildfires and Urban Expansion Impact U.S. Tree Cover

The United States has witnessed significant changes in its tree cover over recent years, with a discernible trend of tree cover loss. According to the latest data, the country's tree cover extent stands at approximately 279 million hectares, which is a substantial portion of the total land area. However, the nation has experienced a net loss in tree cover, with a decrease of about 1.23% observed.

This loss is attributed to several drivers, with forestry activities leading to the most considerable tree cover loss, followed by wildfires and urbanization. Over the years, forestry has consistently been the primary driver, accounting for a significant percentage of the total loss. Wildfires, too, have played a major role, with incidents like the recent single fire alert in Kansas highlighting the ongoing threat to tree cover.

Urbanization has also contributed to the reduction in tree cover, although to a lesser extent than the other two factors. The net change data indicates a loss of over 17 million hectares and a gain of nearly 14 million hectares, resulting in a net negative impact. The disturbances to tree cover have been substantial, with over 28 million hectares affected.

The United States' struggle with tree cover loss underscores the need for a broader discussion on sustainable land management and the balance between development and environmental conservation.
