Chad Battles Surge in Tree Cover Loss, Wildfires Highlight Environmental Strain

Chad is facing a significant environmental challenge as recent data reveals a surge in tree cover loss, with wildfires contributing to the strain on the country's natural resources. Over the past two decades, Chad has experienced a net loss of approximately 843,797 hectares of tree cover, which equates to a 7.83% decrease in the country's overall tree cover extent.

The predominant driver of this deforestation has been shifting agriculture, accounting for the vast majority of tree cover loss. In the year 2023 alone, shifting agriculture was responsible for an estimated loss of over 11,000 hectares. Wildfires, while not the primary cause, have also played a role in this environmental degradation. The latest incident report from Vakaga, Central African Republic, indicates a fire alert in a region close to Chad, underscoring the ongoing risk of wildfires in the area.

This trend of habitat destruction is alarming, as it not only leads to a reduction in biodiversity but also contributes to increased carbon emissions, which exacerbate climate change. The loss of tree cover further jeopardizes the livelihoods of local communities that depend on these ecosystems for sustenance and economic activities.

The data suggests a critical need for sustainable land management practices and conservation efforts to reverse the negative trend and protect Chad's remaining tree cover for future generations.
