Ukraine's vast forested landscapes have faced significant challenges over the years, with the latest incident data revealing a wildfire alert in Kyiv Oblast as of September 7, 2024. This incident adds to a history of tree cover loss that has seen substantial fluctuations. Since 2001, Ukraine has experienced a net loss of approximately 499,821 hectares of tree cover, which is countered by a gain of about 926,367 hectares, leading to a net positive change of 426,545 hectares. This represents a net increase of 4.08% in tree cover.
Forestry activities have been the primary driver of tree cover loss, followed by urbanization and wildfires. In 2022 alone, forestry was responsible for the loss of over 45,562 hectares, contributing to 95.90% of the total tree cover loss for that year. Wildfires, although less frequent, still pose a significant threat, accounting for nearly 929 hectares of lost tree cover in 2022. Urbanization also continues to impact Ukraine's forests, with 56 hectares lost to expanding cities and infrastructure in the same year.
