Angola Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents as Tree Cover Declines by Over 4%
Angola Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents as Tree Cover Declines by Over 4%

Angola is experiencing a significant environmental challenge with a notable increase in wildfire incidents, as recently observed in Cuando Cubango Province. The country's tree cover has declined by approximately 4.41% over the years, with a net loss of over 2.18 million hectares. This trend is largely driven by shifting agriculture, which accounts for the majority of tree cover loss, followed by forestry activities and wildfires.

From 2001 to 2025, Angola has seen a substantial increase in tree cover loss, with the most significant losses occurring in recent years. In 2025 alone, the country experienced a tree cover loss of 377,712 hectares, marking a concerning rise compared to previous years. Shifting agriculture remains the primary driver, responsible for a significant portion of the loss, while wildfires have also contributed to the degradation of Angola's forests.

The latest incident in Cuando Cubango Province highlights the ongoing threat of wildfires, which have been increasingly prevalent in recent years. These incidents not only contribute to the loss of tree cover but also pose a threat to biodiversity and local communities.

As Angola continues to grapple with these environmental challenges, the need for effective management and conservation strategies becomes increasingly critical. The ongoing decline in tree cover and the rise in wildfire incidents underscore the urgency for sustainable practices to protect Angola's natural resources and ensure a balanced ecosystem for future generations.
