Over the years, Brazil has experienced significant changes in its tree cover, with a net decrease of approximately 5.93% in tree cover extent. This decline is primarily driven by shifting agriculture, forestry activities, and wildfires, which have been persistent issues in the region.
From 2001 to 2025, Brazil's tree cover loss has been substantial, with a notable peak in 2016 when the country lost approximately 6.32% of its tree cover. The primary drivers of this loss have been shifting agriculture, contributing to 49.50% of the total loss, and forestry, accounting for 23.60%. Wildfires, although less frequent, have also played a significant role, particularly in 2024, when they accounted for nearly 49.20% of the total tree cover loss.
Despite efforts to mitigate these losses, the net change in tree cover remains negative, with a loss of approximately 28.08 million hectares. This ongoing challenge underscores the need for continued focus on sustainable land management practices and the importance of addressing the root causes of deforestation and forest degradation in Brazil.
