China's forests are under significant pressure as recent data highlights the ongoing challenges posed by wildfires and urbanization. A recent incident in Heilongjiang, China, on April 9, 2026, underscores the persistent threat of wildfires. Over the years, forestry activities have been the primary driver of tree cover changes, accounting for a substantial portion of the loss. From 2001 to 2023, forestry was responsible for approximately 87% of the total tree cover loss, with wildfires and urbanization contributing 5% and 1%, respectively. Despite these challenges, China has seen a net gain in tree cover of about 2.10 million hectares, reflecting a 0.96% change. This complex interplay of factors calls for a nuanced understanding of forest management and conservation efforts in China.
