Zambia Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Fire Incidents
Zambia Grapples with Escalating Tree Cover Loss and Fire Incidents

Zambia is facing a significant challenge with a consistent rise in tree cover loss over the past two decades. The country, which boasts an area of over 75 million hectares, has seen its tree cover extent reduced by approximately 7.30%. Shifting agriculture has been identified as the primary driver, accounting for the vast majority of the tree cover loss. This activity alone has led to a staggering loss of over 178,000 hectares in 2022, contributing to almost 99% of the total deforestation for that year.

The impact of urbanization, although comparatively smaller, has also been notable. Wildfires, which are often a natural part of Zambia's ecosystem, have contributed to the loss as well, but to a lesser extent. The data reveals a disturbing trend of increasing tree cover loss year after year, with the highest recorded in 2021 at over 201,000 hectares.

The recent fire incident reported on November 10, 2024, in the Southern Province of Zambia, although isolated, is a stark reminder of the ongoing environmental challenges the country faces. The cumulative effect of these losses is a net negative change in tree cover, with a loss of over 2.80 million hectares, despite some gains and natural disturbances.

This trend poses serious concerns for the country's biodiversity, water supply, and climate regulation. The loss of tree cover not only threatens wildlife habitats but also affects the livelihoods of local communities and the overall health of the environment. As Zambia continues to grapple with these issues, the need for sustainable land management practices becomes increasingly evident.
