In a recent development, Indonesia has reported a fire incident in the region of East Kalimantan on September 11, 2024. This comes as the country continues to face significant challenges with forest cover loss. Over the past two decades, Indonesia has experienced a net loss in tree cover of approximately 2.62%, with a total loss of around 9 million hectares and a gain of close to 4.90 million hectares.
The primary drivers of tree cover loss have been identified as shifting agriculture, forestry, and urbanization. Notably, the forestry sector has been responsible for the largest portion of this loss. Despite these challenges, there has been a stable tree cover extent of over 124 million hectares, indicating efforts to maintain a significant portion of the forest.
