Spain is witnessing a concerning trend of increasing wildfire incidents, with the latest alert reported in Andalusia on August 12, 2026. Over the years, wildfires have significantly contributed to tree cover loss in the country. In 2025 alone, wildfires accounted for approximately 67% of the total tree cover loss, highlighting the growing impact of these incidents.
From 2001 to 2025, Spain experienced a net change in tree cover of just 0.25%, with a gain of 381,025 hectares and a loss of 348,144 hectares. The persistent wildfires, alongside forestry activities, have been major drivers of this change. In 2025, the total tree cover loss reached 162,796 hectares, with wildfires responsible for a staggering 109,327 hectares.
