The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has experienced a significant decline in tree cover, with a net reduction of 3.50% over recent years. This decline is attributed to various factors, including shifting agriculture, forestry, wildfires, and urbanization. Shifting agriculture alone accounts for approximately 90% of the tree cover loss. The latest incident in Haut-Katanga on August 12, 2026, highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the region. Despite a gain of 1.60 million hectares, the overall net change remains negative, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and conservation efforts. The DRC's tree cover extent, initially at 199 million hectares, has been significantly impacted, with stable areas now reduced to 146 million hectares. This trend raises concerns about biodiversity and environmental stability in the region.
