Greece has reported a new wildfire incident in the Decentralized Administration of Thessaly and Central Greece, marking the latest in a series of environmental challenges for the nation. Over the past two decades, Greece has experienced significant tree cover loss, with a net decrease of 18,861.88 hectares, representing a 0.38% decline in tree cover. Notably, the forestry sector has been the predominant driver of this loss, accounting for the vast majority of the total tree cover loss hectares and associated CO2 emissions.
The impact of wildfires, while less than that of forestry, has been non-negligible, contributing to both tree cover loss and CO2 emissions. In 2022 alone, wildfires were responsible for 847.01 hectares of tree cover loss. This incident data underscores the ongoing vulnerability of Greece's forests to fire-related disturbances, which have compounded the effects of other land-use changes.
