In a recent development, Senegal's Kédougou Region recorded a fire incident on December 14, 2024, marking a continued environmental challenge for the country. Over the years, Senegal has faced significant tree cover loss primarily due to shifting agriculture. Analysis of historical data reveals a fluctuating but persistent decline in tree cover, with a net loss of 31,94.55 hectares, representing a 0.76% decrease from the stable tree cover extent of 3,891,937.36 hectares.
The most substantial loss occurred in 2020, with 758.46 hectares affected, while shifting agriculture remained the predominant driver. Although there has been some tree cover gain, totaling 77,187.39 hectares, it has not been sufficient to offset the losses, which amount to 108,281.94 hectares. The disturbances in tree cover have also resulted in a significant amount of CO2 equivalent gross emissions, further exacerbating the environmental impact.
