Malawi has recorded a new fire incident in its Central Region, adding to the environmental challenges the country faces. Over the past two decades, Malawi has experienced a significant decline in tree cover. Analysis of historical data reveals a net loss of 222,335.59 hectares, which constitutes a 7.88% decrease in tree cover. This loss is primarily attributed to shifting agriculture, which is responsible for the vast majority of tree cover loss, followed by forestry activities.
The country's total area spans over 11.80 million hectares, with tree cover extending to approximately 1.52 million hectares. However, the persistent loss of trees has had a profound impact on the landscape. The year 2014 saw the highest recorded tree cover loss at over 18,500 hectares. Although there has been some gain, the overall trend points to a disturbing decline in tree cover.
