South Africa Grapples with Tree Cover Loss and Wildfire Incidents

South Africa has faced significant environmental challenges over the years, with tree cover loss and wildfires being among the most pressing issues. The country, with an area of over 121 million hectares, has seen a fluctuating trend in tree cover loss due to various drivers. Notably, forestry activities have been the primary cause, followed by shifting agriculture, wildfires, and urbanization.

From 2001 to 2023, South Africa experienced a total tree cover loss of approximately 1.50 million hectares, which is about 2.50% of its total tree cover extent. The impact of forestry alone accounts for a staggering 80% of this loss. Shifting agriculture also played a significant role, contributing to around 15% of the tree cover loss. Wildfires, although less significant in comparison, still contributed to around 4% of the total loss.

The latest incident data from January 2025 reports a wildfire in the Eastern Cape region, emphasizing the ongoing threat of such events to the country's natural resources. The net change in tree cover over the years shows a loss of around 142,000 hectares, indicating a negative trend with a 1.86% decrease in tree cover.

These environmental challenges highlight the need for sustainable management of South Africa's natural resources to mitigate the impact of human activities and natural disasters on its forests and ecosystems.
