Bolivia has been grappling with a significant increase in wildfires and tree cover loss, according to the latest data. The South American nation, known for its vast forests, has seen a worrying trend over the past two decades, with a net loss of 3,324,443 hectares of tree cover, which represents a 5.61% decrease from the stable tree cover. Notably, the most recent incident in the Santa Cruz Department underscores the ongoing challenge, with a wildfire alert issued on July 20, 2024.
Shifting agriculture remains the predominant driver of tree cover loss, accounting for a substantial portion of the total area affected. In 2022 alone, this practice led to the loss of 156,979 hectares, contributing significantly to the year's total loss of 595,996 hectares. Forestry activities and wildfires are also notable contributors, with wildfires accounting for 1,349 hectares of tree cover loss in the same year.
