Ukraine Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents: A 20-Year Analysis of Tree Cover Impact

Ukraine has been experiencing a significant increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest alert reported in Kherson Oblast on September 21, 2026. Over the past two decades, Ukraine has seen a notable trend in tree cover loss, primarily driven by forestry activities and wildfires. Between 2001 and 2025, the country lost approximately 0.83% of its total tree cover, equating to over 499,821 hectares. Forestry activities accounted for the majority of this loss, contributing to over 80% of the total. Wildfires, although less frequent, have had a substantial impact, particularly in recent years, with a marked increase in incidents and severity. In 2024 alone, wildfires were responsible for nearly 49% of the total tree cover loss. Despite these challenges, Ukraine has also seen a net gain in tree cover, with an increase of 4.08% over the same period. This gain is attributed to reforestation efforts and natural regrowth.
