Paraguay continues to grapple with environmental challenges as recent data reveals ongoing wildfire incidents and significant tree cover decline. On September 24, 2026, a new wildfire incident was reported in the Alto Paraguay Department. This adds to the ongoing trend of environmental disturbances in the region.
Over the years, Paraguay has experienced a net tree cover loss of approximately 24.70%. This decline is attributed to various factors, including shifting agriculture, forestry, wildfires, and urbanization. Notably, wildfires have been a persistent issue, contributing significantly to tree cover loss. In 2025 alone, wildfires accounted for approximately 15.30% of the total tree cover loss.
The cumulative impact of these factors has resulted in a net loss of over 5.10 million hectares of tree cover. This environmental degradation poses significant challenges for biodiversity, climate regulation, and local communities dependent on forest resources.
