Tunisia Faces Increasing Wildfire Incidents: A 20-Year Trend Analysis

Tunisia has witnessed a significant increase in wildfire incidents over the past two decades, with the latest alert reported in Le Kef Governorate on July 25, 2026. Analyzing data from 2001 to 2025, wildfires have consistently been a major driver of tree cover loss in the country, accounting for approximately 30% of the total loss. In 2025 alone, wildfires were responsible for 77% of the tree cover loss, highlighting a growing environmental concern. Despite efforts to stabilize tree cover, Tunisia has experienced a net decrease of 1.73% in tree cover over the years.
