In a recent environmental update, Ukraine reported a single fire incident in the Kherson Oblast region. This incident adds to the country's ongoing struggle with tree cover loss, which has seen significant fluctuations over the years. Ukraine, with an area of over 60 million hectares, has a tree cover extent of approximately 18.50%. Analysis of historical data reveals a net change in tree cover, with a loss of roughly 0.83% but a gain of about 1.54%, leading to a net positive change of approximately 0.71% in tree cover over the years.
The primary driver of tree cover loss has been attributed to forestry activities, which account for the vast majority of both the area of tree cover lost and the associated CO2e gross emissions. Wildfires, while less extensive in area, have also contributed to the loss and emissions, alongside urbanization. The data indicates a clear need for sustainable management of Ukraine's forests to mitigate these losses and preserve the country's natural heritage.
