Bolivia Battles Increasing Tree Cover Loss, Wildfires Pose New Threats
Bolivia Battles Increasing Tree Cover Loss, Wildfires Pose New Threats

Bolivia has witnessed a significant trend in tree cover loss over the past two decades, with recent data indicating a concerning continuation of this pattern. The country, which boasts an area of over 108 million hectares, has experienced a net loss in tree cover of approximately 3.30 million hectares, equating to a 5.61% decrease in its tree cover extent.

Shifting agriculture has been identified as the primary driver of tree cover loss, accounting for a substantial portion of the deforestation. This practice alone has resulted in the loss of hundreds of thousands of hectares of tree cover annually, with the most recent figures showing a loss of nearly 157,000 hectares in 2022.

Forestry activities have also contributed to the decline, albeit to a lesser extent than agriculture. Wildfires, while not the leading cause, have become an increasingly visible threat, with the latest incident reported in the Beni Department of Bolivia. The cumulative impact of these drivers not only reduces the tree cover but also contributes to significant carbon emissions, further exacerbating climate change concerns.

The data underscores the need for urgent attention to the country's land management practices and the implementation of sustainable solutions to curb the loss of vital forest ecosystems.
