Cameroon has experienced a significant tree cover loss over the past two decades, with the latest incident reported on December 26, 2024, in the North Region. The country, which boasts an area of over 46 million hectares, has seen its tree cover extent reduced to approximately 31.50 million hectares. The predominant driver of this loss has been shifting agriculture, accounting for the vast majority of the deforestation. Forestry activities, while also contributing, represent a much smaller fraction of the loss.
An analysis of historical data reveals a troubling trend, with a net loss in tree cover of over 625,000 hectares, marking a 1.71% decrease in tree cover stability. This decline in tree cover has not only ecological but also economic implications, as the loss of forested areas can affect biodiversity, climate regulation, and the livelihoods of communities dependent on these ecosystems.
