Portugal has been grappling with a significant increase in wildfire incidents over the past two decades. Recent data highlights a concerning trend, with the Porto District witnessing a new incident on July 27, 2026. This is part of a broader pattern of escalating wildfire occurrences, which have contributed to a 3.39% net decrease in tree cover across the country.
Forestry activities have been the primary driver of tree cover loss, accounting for approximately 75% of the total loss. Wildfires, however, have shown a marked increase, responsible for about 20% of the tree cover loss. Urbanization and shifting agriculture also play roles, albeit smaller, in this environmental challenge.
