Cameroon Grapples with Tree Cover Loss Amid Latest Fire Incident
Cameroon Grapples with Tree Cover Loss Amid Latest Fire Incident

Cameroon has faced a significant challenge in preserving its tree cover, as evidenced by the latest incident in the North Region on December 27, 2024, where a fire alert was recorded. Over the years, the country has experienced a net change in tree cover that indicates a loss of 976,901.79 hectares, which is a 1.71% decrease from the stable tree cover extent. The predominant driver of tree cover loss has been shifting agriculture, contributing to over 90% of the total loss annually.

The data reveals a concerning trend of tree cover loss over the past two decades. While there has been a gain of 351,62.95 hectares, it is overshadowed by the disturbances and losses that have occurred. The impact on Cameroon's rich biodiversity and ecosystems is profound, with the loss of tree cover also contributing to significant emissions of CO2 into the atmosphere. The latest incident is a stark reminder of the ongoing environmental challenges that Cameroon faces.
