Mali is facing an escalating challenge with tree cover loss, as evidenced by the latest incident in the Gao Region where a fire alert was recorded on January 28, 2025. Over the years, the country has experienced a significant reduction in tree cover, with a net loss of 256,113 hectares, marking a 3.28% decrease from its original tree cover extent. The predominant cause of this deforestation has been shifting agriculture, which alone accounted for a substantial portion of the tree cover loss.
The data from 2001 to 2023 reveals a worrying trend where the annual tree cover loss has fluctuated, with some years witnessing sharp increases. Notably, 2013 saw the highest recorded loss over the period, with over 409 hectares lost, primarily due to shifting agriculture. The cumulative effect of these losses has not only reduced the tree cover but also contributed to significant gross emissions of CO2 equivalent, amounting to millions of megagrams over the two decades.
