Angola Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents as Tree Cover Declines by Over 4%

In recent years, Angola has witnessed a significant increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest reported in Cuando Cubango Province on July 28, 2026. This alarming trend is coupled with a concerning decline in tree cover, which has decreased by over 4% since 2001. The primary driver of this decline is shifting agriculture, responsible for approximately 90% of the tree cover loss. Wildfires have also contributed to this environmental challenge, accounting for a smaller yet significant portion of the loss. The data reveals a net change in tree cover of -2,188,485 hectares, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable land management practices.
