Guinea has been facing a significant challenge with escalating tree cover loss, which has seen a net decrease of 8.34% in recent years. The country, which boasts an area of over 24 million hectares, has a tree cover extent of approximately 8.16 million hectares. However, this coverage has been under threat, with shifting agriculture being the predominant driver, followed by wildfires and urbanization. In 2022 alone, shifting agriculture accounted for a staggering 88% of the total tree cover loss, while wildfires contributed to around 10.50%. The cumulative effect of these factors has not only reduced the tree cover but has also led to increased carbon emissions, with the total gross emissions reaching over 64 million metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent in the same year. The latest incident data from Kankan, Guinea, indicates an ongoing struggle with wildfires, highlighting the need for urgent attention to this environmental concern.
