India Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents: Analyzing the Impact on Tree Cover and Ecosystems
India Faces Rising Wildfire Incidents: Analyzing the Impact on Tree Cover and Ecosystems

India has witnessed a significant increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest alert reported in Chhattisgarh on April 30, 2026. This trend highlights the growing threat to the country's tree cover and ecosystems. Over the past two decades, India has experienced a substantial tree cover loss, with forestry activities contributing to approximately 80% of the total loss. Shifting agriculture and urbanization have also played significant roles, accounting for 13% and 5% respectively. Despite these challenges, India has managed a net gain of 1.30% in tree cover, thanks to reforestation efforts and natural regeneration. However, the persistent threat of wildfires, which have accounted for around 1% of the tree cover loss, continues to pose a risk to the country's biodiversity and climate resilience. As India navigates these challenges, it is crucial to foster discussions on sustainable land management and conservation strategies to protect its vital ecosystems.
