Bulgaria has experienced a net increase in tree cover, a positive sign amidst environmental challenges. Over the past two decades, the country has seen a net gain in tree cover of approximately 59,877 hectares, which represents a 1.41% increase from the existing tree cover. This is a result of 106,351 hectares of tree cover gain against a loss of 46,473 hectares. The forestry sector has been the predominant driver of tree cover loss, accounting for the vast majority of the 204,540 hectares disturbed.
In the context of these developments, Bulgaria recorded a fire incident in the Pleven Province on July 30, 2024, marking a continued need for vigilance in forest management. While the incident was isolated, with only one alert reported, it underscores the importance of maintaining efforts to protect and expand forested areas.
