Ukraine's vast forested landscapes, covering an area of over 60 million hectares, have experienced significant disturbances over the years. A recent fire incident in Kharkiv Oblast adds to the ongoing challenges facing the country's forests. Despite a net gain in tree cover of approximately 426,546 hectares, which represents a change of around 4.08%, the country has been grappling with a consistent pattern of tree cover loss due to various drivers, with forestry activities being the predominant cause.

Over the past two decades, forestry has accounted for the lion's share of tree cover loss, with wildfires and urbanization also contributing to the decline. The data reveals a complex interplay of factors leading to a fluctuating trend in tree cover loss and associated carbon emissions. For instance, the year 2016 saw the highest recorded tree cover loss of over 106,760 hectares, with a corresponding spike in carbon emissions.
