Algeria has witnessed a concerning increase in wildfire incidents, with the latest reported in Skikda Province on July 21, 2026. Over the years, wildfires have been a significant driver of tree cover loss in the country. Between 2001 and 2025, wildfires accounted for approximately 31% of the total tree cover loss. In 2025 alone, wildfires were responsible for 81% of the tree cover loss. Despite these challenges, Algeria has seen a net positive change of 1.43% in tree cover, thanks to gains in other areas. The latest incident in Skikda Province underscores the need for continued vigilance and adaptive strategies to manage and mitigate wildfire risks.
