Zambia Faces Escalating Tree Cover Challenges as Wildfire Incidents Rise in Northwestern Province
Zambia Faces Escalating Tree Cover Challenges as Wildfire Incidents Rise in Northwestern Province

In recent years, Zambia has witnessed a significant increase in tree cover loss, with a net decline of 7.30% over the past two decades. The latest incident in Northwestern Province on August 22, 2026, highlights a growing concern for the region. This incident is part of a broader trend where wildfires, along with shifting agriculture, have contributed to a substantial decrease in tree cover. Shifting agriculture alone accounts for approximately 78% of the total tree cover loss. Despite efforts to stabilize the situation, the cumulative impact of these factors has led to a net loss of over 2.80 million hectares of tree cover. The continued rise in wildfire incidents poses a threat to Zambia's ecological balance and calls for immediate attention to mitigate further environmental degradation.
