Ethiopia is grappling with significant environmental challenges, as recent data reveals a 3.60% net decrease in tree cover. This decline is attributed to various factors, including shifting agriculture, forestry, wildfires, and urbanization. Notably, wildfires have contributed to tree cover loss, with a recent incident reported in the Afar region on June 27, 2026.
Over the years, shifting agriculture has been the primary driver of tree cover loss, accounting for approximately 85% of the total loss. Forestry and urbanization also play roles, albeit to a lesser extent. The cumulative impact of these activities has resulted in a net loss of over 738,000 hectares of tree cover.
